House of Somarra

Where the Fabric Leads

Sixteen years of sourcing, cutting, and hand-finishing. This is how a House of Somarra piece comes to be.

From the founder

The Philosophy

“When I design, I don’t begin with a sketch. I begin with the cloth — its weight, its colour, the way it falls. Once I understand its nature, the design comes forward on its own. Silhouettes are born from the material’s truth.”

— Sonia Jain, Founder

The sourcing

Sourced by Hand, Not by Catalogue

Our fabrics come from the old lanes of Delhi, narrow markets where the good cloth is still kept behind the counter for people who know to ask. Sonia has worked with the same vendors for over a decade.

A Somarra fabric is chosen because it holds its colour, its body, and its finish through many years and many washes, because the garment is meant to stay in your wardrobe, not pass through it.

Letting the cloth lead

The Material’s Truth

Every fabric asks for something different. We listen before we cut.

Cotton

Holds shape. Gives structure.

Silk

Invites flow and movement.

Linen

Breathes easy. Wears casually.

Brocade

Demands quiet tailoring.

When the fabric leads, the silhouette follows and the garment flatters, and it lasts.

The craft

The Hands That Make It

Every piece leaves our studio having passed through several pairs of hands. Our karigars do the handwork — the embroidery, the tie-and-dye, the finishing that no machine reproduces. Our Masterji and Sonia spend hours over a single silhouette, arguing over a seam, a fall, a proportion, until the piece is right.

This is slow, and it is meant to be. Detail of this kind cannot be rushed into existence.

The fit

A Fit That Doesn’t Ask You to Change

Somarra’s signature is a silhouette designed to work across body types. Any woman who walks into the studio can pick a piece off the rail, try it on, and find it fits — usually with only minor alteration.

We build this in at the pattern stage rather than solving it at the fitting. It is the quiet part of the craft, and the part clients notice first.
